Anti Idling Legislation in Westchester County 2/10/09

 

Environmental Forum at Greenburgh Nature Center:  What You Need To Know About Engine Idling, Its Impact On The Environment And A Recently Enacted County Anti-Idling Law

Forum is free and open to the general public

 

 

Where : Greenburgh Nature Center, 99 Dromore Road (off Central Park Avenue), Scarsdale

When : Tuesday, February 24th at  7:00 PM  

Why : As of February 10, 2009, when the anti-idling law went into effect, engine idling is restricted to three minutes. The law applies to all vehicles operating within the county.

The law adopts a recommendation from the report of the County Board’s Healthy Air Task Force which studied and documented Westchester’s unhealthful air quality. The Climate Change Action Plan produced by the county’s 2008 Global Warming Task Force also recommended idling reduction by all sectors to lower greenhouse gas emissions (e.g., CO2 in tailpipe exhaust) to improve air quality.

We are casting for the 2^nd season of the eco-home makeover show, WA$TED and we want to hear about your crimes against the environment.

·        Do you have extremely high utility bills?

·        Do your kids not know the meaning of “recycle”?

·        Does your husband or roommates run your air conditioner even while you’re not home?

·        Are you interested in saving money?

·        Are you reluctant to adopt a more earth-friendly lifestyle?

·        Do you think that eco-friendly alternatives are a waste of time?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you could qualify to be on our show and to receive a complete household eco-makeover. This eco-makeover will include lifestyle tips, cool gadgets and products, and superficial “green” changes to the home.  And the best part – we help you save money.  We are looking for households with big personalities that include at least one person who needs a push in the right direction for a more efficient, effective green household.

Requirements:

Must live within 2 hours of NYC

Must own home/apartment

SHOOT is about 2 days, plus some additional time over the course of a month

An Eco Friendly Holiday Season

 

A variety of ways to help protect the environment have sprung up for this holiday season.  Studies now show that 54% of holiday shoppers will choose to be eco-friendly if given a chance.  So a few ideas.

• Christmas tree lights that are solar powered.  These lights are available at Home Depot and probably elsewhere and come with a small solar panel.  These lights will stay lit until midnight.
• Using organic beeswax candles in a menorah
• Using eco friendly and reusable bags to wrap gifts, these bags can then be used at the supermarket instead of the plastic or paper bags.

All of the lights on the Times Square New Years Ball have been replaced this year in honor of the 100th year.  Now the LED lights use 1 watt of power vs last year and prior years which used 40 watts.

There is also a new site called Catalog Choice.  This site is free and you can opt out of receiving catalogs you are not interested in.   Catalog Choice is a sponsored project of the Ecology Center. It is endorsed by the National Wildlife Federation and the Natural Resources Defense Council, and funded by the Overbrook Foundation, the Merck Family Fund, and the Kendeda Fund. You can eliminate duplicate and unsolicited catalog mailings - now that is an environmentally friendly thing to do.
